Captive Innovation and Cyber Risk Cap-a-thon 2018
17 Oct - 07:30 AM
Hartford, United States
What is a "Cap-a-thon"?    It is the Connecticut Captive Insurance Association's ("CCIA") unique approach to innovation.  It is an intentional, design sprint event in which business leaders, contributors and other subject matter experts come together to learn and intensively collaborate on a project or innovation. The structure is loosely based on "hackathon" concepts and will provide a condensed time for collaborative work.  The center piece of this event is cyber security. The day will focus on innovations for captive insurance entities -- as platforms for risk management and risk aggregation to impact the management of current and emerging risks faced by captive owners.   Innovative solutions offer a set of products and processes, cobbled together to create impact and enhanced value.  The "hackathon" concepts accelerate the development process by rapidly advancing the concepts through series of development stages with the output being actionable -- refined throughout the process. The output of the Cap-a-thon is a solution that successfully addresses or manages a specific risk issue, market need, and potentially a disruptive approach. Join us for a day of engaged learning and collaboration, with a focus on one of the most significant risk exposues for every organization which encompasses financial, reputational, physical and operational aspects -- cyber risk! During the day-long event, SciBite will be opening up access to tooling, including award-winning Termite entity extraction tool with a rich API and Python toolkit. We will also be giving early access to some of our in-development entity identification and enrichment machine-learning toolkit. We will also be making a convenient set of training and testing life science data available on our Cloud Hosting for use during the hackathon, including literature articles, structured experimental data, and unstructured reports. Representatives from SciBite will be on hand to help with any use of the SciBite tooling, though you are in no way restricted to just these tools! Bring along your own ideas, tools, data, and problems, and we will hack together proto solutions in proposed areas of: -Ontology learning -Document classification -Semantic visualization and summarisation On the day: Food, snacks, drinks, and beer will be provided There will be a prize for the most innovative semantic tech hack Certificate of participation will be issued for everyone attending You can work alone on any project that interests you, though we also encourage partnering up with other like-minded individuals to work alongside one another to tackle your objectives. Outputs from all individuals/teams will be presented at the end of the hackathon. Why should I take part? Whether this is your first hackathon or your tenth, there are loads of reasons to participant in hackathons. Here are a few: Working with like-minded hackers - there will be other people in the room just like you, with similar problems you can work on together; a problem shared is a problem halved Working with people unlike you – there will also be people in the room different from you, with other skill sets and problems you can learn from; hearing different perspectives are always valuable Build personal networks - make new connections with people from other organisations Have fun! - be creative using tools and approaches you might not have seen or used before Great, how do I get creative with Semantic Tech? Hack for the Sea 2018
            22 Sep - 10:00 AM
            Gloucester, United States
Take on challenges in marine science, research, and industry at The 3rd Annual Hack for the Sea. A "hackathon" is an attempt to ideate and make progress toward solutions to shared challenges. Hack for the Sea is slightly different than many other hackathons in that: It focuses on marine science exclusively All submissions must be released as open source It is meant to be a healthy, inclusive, and outcome-driven event. Challenge Statements This year's challenges come from our beneficiary organizations: the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. (CUAHSI), the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI), The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, Ocean Alliance, and the MassBays National Estuary Program. 1. How does a changing coastal watershed impact coastal waters? 2. Where and when will Cod spawning occur? 3. Can a whale be identified based on their blowholes? 4. Can a mooring be designed that is not only eelgrass-friendly, but also user-friendly? More details about challenges and prize structure to follow. Special thanks to our technology purveyors: Balsamiq Get.tech Microshare FAQs What does my ticket get me? Participation in the weekend as a Hacker A free month's access to our "Marine Hacker Sandbox" Food during the event. Immediate access to the Hack for the Sea Slack channel Access to any pre-hackathon Q&A Google Hangout sessions (schedule TBD) A Snotbot Sticker A Hack for the Sea waterproof dry bag. A personal email from the organizer to confirm your registration to open lines of communication early.    Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? This is a family-friendly, kid-friendly event, and there are no age restrictions.  "Hackathon?" What is that? I'm not technical, so I'm not going to be of much use. You should still come. Your skill sets will be useful to any team, provided you share a love of and passion for the ocean. And no, it's not that meaning of "hack." We're just tinkerers. What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? The American Legion is walking distance from the Gloucester Commuter Rail station, and there is public parking available. What can I bring into the event? This year, we are trying something new - bring pre-existing work in. Whatever makes it easiest for you to achieve the objectives of the challenges to the benefit of our organizations... go for it. But doesn't that give some teams an unfair advantage? This year we're also doing judging differently - you will be judged holistically based on your efforts and conduct during the weekend. More details to follow. How can I contact the organizer with any questions? Yes. Reach out at mark@mrh.io
